Dumping Religious Barriers to Business Success
God is not glorified by your struggle
This is for the Christian woman entrepreneur who's tired of being broke while doing "God's work." If that’s not you, stop reading; it’s okay.
If you've ever felt guilty about charging what you're worth, given away your services for free, or wondered why your ministry keeps draining your bank account—you're about to discover why the most spiritual thing you can do might be raising your prices. ⚠️ Warning: church folks might not like what you do after reading this.
The Truth About Faith and Money That Changed Everything For Me
Several years ago, I remember walking through my home crying over my business numbers. Again.
Remember that feeling? That knot in your stomach when you checked your bank balance after pouring your heart into your business?
When you worked harder than ever but somehow made less than the teenager bagging groceries down the street? (Which is honorable, by the way.)
That was my reality every month. I thought this struggle was just my cross to bear. My sacrifice.
Let me give you an example. Mickey sells health products. For years, she priced them affordably—so many times her profit barely covered her material and expenses.
Her husband picked up extra shifts to keep their lights on. Her kids made Mother's Day cards that said, "We love you, and we miss you."
She ran around educating people on their health, lifting them up often until midnight.
Why did she audibly say, "I'm doing God's work. It's not supposed to be about money."
Can you relate?
When "Serving Others" Becomes a Trap
OK, can we talk about something that's been bugging me for years?
This whole "servant leadership" thing we've been taught has a dark side. Nobody talks about it at women's ministry brunches, but it's real.
Think about your last month. How many times did you:
✅ Create something amazing... then give it away free
😓 Feel that stomach-drop when someone asked for your help, but you said yes anyway
🙈 Apologize when telling someone your prices
Stay up until 2am working while telling yourself, "God will get the glory."
And the whole time, you thought you were being a good Christian woman.
I spent many years living this way. I’m embarrassed to say—too many.
When my doctor told me to “Let Your Eyes Get Fat,” I realized something had to change.
What if this twisted version of serving others is actually preventing the impact God really designed you to make?
The Missing Bible Stories
Did you know the Bible is actually full of women with serious business sense? Women who didn't shrink themselves?
Here's what nobody mentions in women's ministry:
The Bible is full of women with serious business sense.
Remember Lydia? She was a successful purple cloth merchant who funded ministry.
The Proverbs 31 woman? She bought fields and sold merchandise with her money.
Proverbs 31:16
16 She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
These weren't meek women. These were powerhouses who used their business success to change their world.
So why don't we hear more of these stories?
I’ll tell you why:
Because financially powerful women are disruptive.
They change systems.
They fund new movements.
They can't be controlled by small-minded leadership.
And that scares some people.
The Sunday School Money Lie That Nearly Killed My Business
Let’s get real.
Remember that Sunday School teacher who told you “money is the root of all evil”?
(Spoiler alert: that’s not even what the Bible says—it’s the love of money.)
But that teaching stuck, didn’t it? Along with gems like:
“Good Christians don’t focus on wealth”
“If you really trusted God, you wouldn’t worry about charging full price”
“True ministry comes from sacrifice, not prosperity”
I believed and worked with this mindset for years. And it nearly destroyed me.
What was my wake-up call?
When I sought counsel from a friend and they said to me, "This is your belief, don’t put it on God."
I was offended—it cut.
I had to sit with her words and you know what? She was right. It’s just bad business.
Here’s what happens when we don’t charge enough:
😠 We resent the very work we once loved
😩 We can’t afford help when we need it most
💤 Our families get our exhausted leftovers and God gets less
🛑 We’re too broke to give generously to causes we care about
😕 We model scarcity, not abundance, to other women
It is a contradiction to who we say God is. And we call this good stewardship? Come on.
Breaking Free: My Money Wake-Up Call
I remember the exact moment everything changed for me.
I was sitting in my car, ready to lead another workshop I’d undercharged for. Feeling some kind of way. Why did I do this again? Agree to being underpaid?
“Don’t get mad about what you agree to” echoed in my head.
I bowed my head to pray, and suddenly thought:
"This is ridiculous. Jesus didn’t die so I could be perpetually broke while serving others."
Here’s what clicked for me:
God doesn’t want you/us to just survive. The same God who created gold, gems, and abundance isn’t glorified by your struggle.
Your Sacred Action Step
Here’s what I want you to do RIGHT NOW:
👉 Look at your current prices. Now, raise them by at least 20%. Yes, today. Yes, I’m serious.
If your stomach just flipped—good. That’s the religious money mindset being challenged. Push through it.
If you don’t have prices yet because you’ve been giving everything away for free, it’s time to create your first paid offer. Today. At least get to the market value for what you offer.
This isn’t just a business decision—it’s a theological one. It’s declaring that:
Your work has divinely-ordained value
You believe in biblical abundance, not scarcity
You’re ready to fund the dreams God placed in you
